trait
a specific feature of something, such as eye color, hair color, or height.
organism
a living thing that has all five traits of life - it reponds, moves, shows organization, reproduces, and grows and develops.
environment
everything in an organism's surroundings including other organisms, weather, water, sound, light, temperature, soil and rocks.
cell
the smallest unit of life in a living thing; cells take in materials and release release energy and waste products.
development
all the changes that take place during the life of an organism.
classification
the groupings of objects based on common traits, for living organisms, can be based on common body parts, similarities in the materials that make up the bodies, or chemicals found inside the organisms' bodies.
species
a group of organisms that can breed with one another and produce healthy offspring.
kingdom
a large group of organisms that share certain featues; Earth's species are classified into 6 kingdoms - Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plant and Animal.
virus
a disease-causing particle that has some things in common with both living and nonliving things - it reproduces (in living cells) but it doesn't eat, grow, or respond to its environment.
vaccine
a preparation made from dead or weak viruses that is given by mouth or by a needle and which causes the body to make substances that resists particular viruses.
