  • Back

The force created by gravity acting upon an object's mass.

Weight

The SI unit of power.

Watts

A push, pull, or a twist applied to an object.

Force

The unit of force (N)

Newtons

The resistive force of an object caused by it moving over (or through) another object (or fluid).

Friction

The rate at which speed or velocity is changing.

Acceleration

A measure of the force applied over a given area.

Pressure

A measure of how far an object has travelled or the amount of space between two objects.

Distance

The force accelerating an object forwards.

Thrust

The energy an object has when it is able to move downwards towards the Earth (or some other mass).

Gravitational Potential energy

A measure of the amount of work that can be done in a given amount of time.

Power

A graph used to show the distance an object has travelled over a period if time. The gradient represents the speed of the object.

Distance-Time graph

The rate at which an object is slowing down. When calculating it using

'a=v/t' the answer will have a negative sign.

Deceleration

This will result in an overall net force and an object would accelerate or decelerate.

Unbalanced Force

The friction on an object as it travels through a fluid such as air or water.

Drag

Under these conditions an object will remain stationary, or continue at a constant velocity.

Balanced Force

The SI unit of energy.

Joules

Equivalent to the force applied to an object multiplied by the distance it travels.

Work

The amount of matter in an object.

Mass

The ability to do work. It comes in many forms, and can neither be created nor destroyed.

Energy

Speed in a given direction.

Velocity

The 't' in 'v=d/t' and 'a=v/t'

Time

A graph used to show how the speed of an object has changed over a petiod of time. The gradient represents the acceleration of the object.

Speed-Time graph

When one form of energy is converted into another form (or forms) such as Ep becoming Ek.

Energy transformation

The reason why energy transformations are never 100% efficient.

Energy loss

A measure of how fast an object is travelling. Units are 'm s-1.'

Speed

The form of energy related to moving objects.

Kinetic Energy

The SI unit of pressure.
