Weathering

Is a physical and chemical process that breaks down rocks into soil

-Physical= heating/cooling

-Chemical= acid rain, vegetation (plants: example: moss), microorganisms

Light can be

1)Refracted- or bent when is passes from a substance of one density to a substance with a different density because it causes it to slow down or speed up; example: gas ->solid(air->glass), gas ->liquid (air ->water)

2)Reflected- or bounced off an object if the surface is smooth, shiny, or white. Light reflected off rough surfaces is scattered and results in a blurry or poor reflection.

3)Absorbed- or taken in by a dark or black objects

Sound

waves travel best in materials when the molecules are close together.

-Sound does NOT travel through a vacuum (empty space without molecules)

-Sound travels more slowly than light

-Bounces off hard surfaces and results in echoes

-Sonar measures sound waves bouncing off objects as do ultrasound medical devices

Topographic maps

Use concentric circles (circles within circles) to show elevation (height) on maps. The more numerous the circles and the closer together they are on the map the greater the elevation.

Succession

Is the gradual change in a biome (biological community or ecosystem) over a long period of time.

Ecosystem

All of the living and nonliving thing in a given area existing and interacting together.

Population

All of the members of a species that live in the same area and make up a breeding group.

Competitive

Groups of organisms that compete for the same food source.

Mutualism

(Mutually beneficial) a relationship between different species that helps both of them by together. eg. Bacteria living in a cow's stomach.

Parasite

A plant or animal that lives at the expense of another living thing.

Producer

Organism containing chlorophyll that makes food by photosynthesis. Found at the beginning of a food chain.

Consumer

Organism that eats organisms for nutrition.

Decomposer

Fungus, bacteria, or various animals that obtain by breaking down dead organic matter.

Predator

living things that kill and eat other things

Prey

living thing that is eaten by another living thing

Warm-blooded

organism that maintains a warm body temperature no matter what the temperature of the enviroment

Cold-blooded

organism whose body temperature depends on the enviroment

Vertebrate

animal with a backbone

Invertebrate

animal without a backbone

Food Web

overlapping food chains that show the flow of energy from producers to consumers. The ultimate source of all energy is the sun

Food Chain

link from a lower organism (usually a plant) to a higher organism and so on.

Pollution

contamination of the air, water, or land. It can be caused by burning, dumping waste, heating of water pesticides, etc

Water Cycle

Evaporation, condensation, precipitation
