Photosynthesis
the synthesis of complex organic materials, esp. carbohydrates, from carbon dioxide, water, and inorganic salts, using sunlight as the source of energy and with the aid of chlorophyll and associated pigments.
Use photosynthesis in a Sentence
Autotroph
any organism capable of self-nourishment by using inorganic materials as a source of nutrients and using photosynthesis or chemosynthesis as a source of energy, as most plants and certain bacteria and protists
Heterotroph
an organism requiring organic compounds for its principal source of food.
Cellular Respiration
the oxidation of organic compounds that occurs within cells, producing energy for cellular processes
Pigment
a dry insoluble substance, usually pulverized, which when suspended in a liquid vehicle becomes a paint, ink, etc.
Cholorophyll
the green coloring matter of leaves and plants, essential to the production of carbohydrates by photosynthesis, and occurring in a bluish-black form
Carotenoid
any of a group of red and yellow pigments, chemically similar to carotene, contained in animal fat and some plants.
Thylakoid
a flattened sac or vesicle lined with a pigmented membrane that is the site of photosynthesis, in plants and algae occurring in interconnected stacks constituting a granum of the chloroplast, and in other photosynthesizing organisms occurring either singly or as part of the cell membrane or other structure.
Electron Transport Chain
series of molecules th5ough passing along a thylakid membrane
NADPH
biochem the chemically reduced form of NADP
Carbon Dioxide Fixation
transformation from Carbon Dioxide to organic compunds
Calvin Cycle
botany a series of reactions, occurring during photosynthesis, in which glucose is synthesized from carbon dioxide
Aerobic
requiring the presence of air or free oxygen for life.
Anaerobic
living in the absence of air or free oxygen.
Glycolysis
the catabolism of carbohydrates, as glucose and glycogen, by enzymes, with the release of energy and the production of lactic or pyruvic acid.
NADH
an abbreviation for the reduced form of NAD in electron transport reactions
Krebs Cycle
a cycle of enzyme-catalyzed reactions in living cells that is the final series of reactions of aerobic metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fatty acids, and by which carbon dioxide is produced, oxygen is reduced, and ATP is formed.
Fermentation
the act or process of fermenting.
