What is the difference between a pure substance and a mixture?

In a pure substance all particles are the same throughout, in a mixture different particles are mixed together.

What is the difference between a homogeneous mixture and a heterogeneous mixture?

In a homogeneous mixture you can't see separate parts, in a heterogeneous mixture you can see the separate parts

What is the law of conservation of mass?

Mass cannot be created nor destroyed

Reaction with water

What are some simple tests that you can do to observe some of the properties of matter?

Find mass, volume and density

Find solubility (dissolve in water)

Heat it to see if it burns/catches fire

What are the three main points of the kinetic theory of matter?

-All substances are made up of particles that are constantly moving

-when you raise the temperatures if a substance the particles speed up

-particles are constantly colliding with themselves and their container

How are particles in a solid arranged?

They are close together

How do the particles in a solid behave?

They vibrate

How are the particles in a liquid arranged?

They are close together

How do the particles in a liquid behave?

The slide past each other

How are the particles in a gas arranged?

They are scattered around their container

How do the particles in a gas behave?

They bounce around the container and collide

What are the differences between a gas and a plasma?

Gasses have no electric current, plasmas do

Which types of matter have a definite shape?

Solids

Which types of matter have an indefinite shape?

Liquids, gasses, plasmas

Which types of matter have a definite volume?

Solids, liquids

Which types of matter have an indefinite volume?

Gasses

What happens to water as it's temperature goes from -5°C to 105°C?

Solid - melting - liquid - boiling - gas

Why can't matter increase it's temperature while changing state?

Energy is being used in changing state

What is absolute zero?

When particles have 0 kinetic energy

What is the mass, charge, and locations of a proton?

Charge: 1+

Mass: 1AMU

Location: nucleus

What is the mass, charge, and locations of a nuetron?

Charge: 0Mass: 1AMULocation: nucleus

What is the mass, charge, and locations of an electron?

Charge: 1-Mass: 0AMULocation: electron cloud

What is an isotope?

An atom that had the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons

What are valence electrons?

Electrons in the outer level of an atom

What is a period?

Rows going across

What is a group?

Columns going down

Where are metals, nonmetals and metaloids located on the periodic table?

Metals are on the left

Nonmetals are on the right

Metaloids are between them
