Continental Shelf
The gently sloping section of the continental margin located between the shoreline and the continental shelf.
Continental Slope
The steeply inclined section of the continental margin located between the continental rise and the continental shelf.
Continental Rise
The gently sloping section of the continental margin located between the continental slope and the abyssal plain.
Abyssal Plain
A large, flat, almost level area of the deep-ocean basin.
Mid-Ocean Ridge
a long, undersea mountain chain that has a steep, narrow valley at its center, that forms as magma rises from the asthenosphere, and that creates new oceanic lithosphere (sea floor) as tectonic plates move apart
Seamount
A submerged mountain on the ocean floor that is at least 1,000 m high that has a volcanic origin
Ocean Trench
a long, narrow, and steep depression on the ocean floor that forms as when one tectonic plate subducts beneath another plate; trenches run parallel to volcanic island chains or to the coastlines of continents; also called a trench or a deep-ocean trench
Rift Valley
A long, narrow valley that forms as tectonic plates seperate.
Salinity
The amount of dissolved salts in water.
Water Cycle
The continuous movement between the atmosphere, the land, and the oceans.
Benthos
Organisms that live at the bottom of oceans or bodies of fresh water.
Nekton
All organisms that swim actively in open water, independent of currents.
Plankton
the mass of mostly microscopic organisms that float or drift freely in the waters of aquatic (freshwater and marine) environments
Hadal Zone
The deep zone of the ocean, below 6,000 m
Abyssal Zone
the benthic environment that extends from beneath the bathyal zone to a depth of up to 6,000 m
Sublittoral Zone
the benthic environment from the extreme low-water level to about 200 m deep
Intertidal Zone
an area along ocean shorelines that lies between low and high water lines
Bathyal Zone
the region of the ocean at depths between 200 m and 4,000 m
Neritic Zone
a shallow marine environment that is near the shore or over the continental shelf and that is rich in minerals and nutrients produced by biotic activity

Fish
Overfishing
Seaweed
Nonliving
Gas
Oil
Desalination

What are mid-ocean ridges?
A chain of underwater mountains.
What kind of river has a wide, flat floodplain and many bends where it deposits rock and soil?
Old Rivers
What method of flood control involves building a barrier that holds excess water in an artificial lake?
Building a Dam.
