What are electromagnetic waves?
a form of energy that can move through the vacuum of space
What is radiation?
the direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
What kinds of energy do we recieve from the sun?
Most of the evergy from the sun travels to Earth in the form of visible light and infrared radiation. A small amount arives as ultraviolet radiation
What is visible light?
it includes all of the colors that you see in a rainbow and the different colors are the result of different wavelengths. Red and orange have the longest wavelenghts, blue and violet have the shortest wavelengthss
What is infrared radiation?
has wavelengths that are longer thanred light. It is not visible but you can feel the heat
What is ultraviolet radiation?
an invisible form of energy with wavelengths that are shorter than violet light. this can cause sunburns, skin cancer, and eye damage
What happens when Earth's surface is heated?
it radiates most of the energy back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation
What is the greenhouse effect?
the process by which gases hold heat in the air
What is temperature?
the average amount of energy of motion of each particle of a substance
What is thermal energy?
the total energy of motion in the particles of a substance
What is the instrument that measures temperature?
thermometer
How is heat transfered?
radiation, conduction, and convection
What is conduction?
the direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that is touching
What is convection?
the transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid
What is radiation?
the direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
