Define the word and tell how it contributes to Natural Selection:

OVERPRODUCTION

Overproduction is when food supply, water, and living space is not large enough to care for all of the offspring.

Contributes to natural selection because not all can survive.

Define the word and tell how it contributes to Natural Selection:

VARIATION

Variation is when some members of a species differ from one another in some of their traits. This is a genetic variation.

It contributes to natural selection because some of these variations give them an advantage over the other species of animal.

Define the word and tell how it contributes to Natural Selection:

COMPETITION

Competition does not usually involve direct fighting. An example is if one animal of the same species is faster, he may be better able to get away from a predator.

This contributes to natural selection because the animal that is most successful in competition survives.

Define the word and tell how it contributes to Natural Selection:

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Environmental factors can affect an animals ability to survive. If an animal is able to adapt to changing environmental factors they have a better chance at survival.

This contributes to natural selection because the animal that is most successful in adapting to change will survive.

Yo yo yo it's yo gurl reg dawg in da house

Define the word and tell how it contributes to Natural Selection:

ADVANTAGEOUS/DISADVANTAGROUS TRAITS

An advantageous trait is a trait that helps a species to better survive and reproduce. It helps with Natural Selection by maintaining that plant or animals life.

A disadvantageous trait is one that does not help a species to survive (may hinder it)

What is the difference between natural selection and artificial selection?

Natural selection- individuals with certain variations that allow them to survive and reproduce pass on these characteristics.

Artificial selection is intentional breeding to maintain certain characteristics (race horses).

What contributes to variations? What causes variations?
Environmental factors can contribute to variation and may cause these variations.
How did Darwin's trip to the Galapagos Island influence his history of evolution?
Darwin say many similarities between the animals on the Galapagos Islands and those in South America. He realized that the animals had changed over time to adapt to their new surroudings. In order for these animals and plants to survive their new environment they had to gradually change over time.
Explain how the environment determines if a trait will be advantageous versus disadvantageous. Use examples...
Environmental factors that help a species to survive are adventageous.

An example:

Some monkey plants that were previously not able to survive in copper soil began to adapt to this environmental factor. They reproduced plants that could not survive in this copper soil.

Explain where Lamark went wrong when trying to explain how evolution works...

Lamark believed that species changed because they wanted to, and that there was a predetermined plan.

How can you look at an organisms and describe some of its adaptations....how did these help it survive or reproduce...what does the environment look like given these adaptations?

In finches-

food resources on the different islands varied:

Some finches had long sharp beaks (to eat insects) and some had short strong beaks (to eat seeds). These adaptations helped them survive because of the different food supplies on the different islands. Helped them survive and ultimately reproduce.
