oxidation #
the charge on an ion
hydrate
a compound that has water chemically attactched to its ions and written into its chemical formula
molecule
a neutral particle that forms from a result of electron sharing
binary compound
compound that is composed of two elements
chemical formula
tells what elements a comound contaions and the exact # of the atoms of each element in a unit of that comound
chemical bond
the force that holds atoms together in a comound
How do you correctly write the formula for a hydrate?
write formula 4 comound, place dot followed by # of water molecules (CuSO4 . 5H2O)
What elements bond ionically, and what elements bond covalently? Why?
ionically: nonmetals, and metals or metalliods
covalently: between at least 2 nonmetals
why?
What information does an oxidation number give you? Why don’t you use oxidation numbers for covalent bonds?
it tells you how many electrons an atom has gained lots or shared. Becuase it has to do with gaining and loses electrons which covalent bonds don't do.
Be able to choose, draw, and explain how elements can form ionic bonds
see differences sheet
Be able to choose, draw, and explain how elements can form covalent bonds
see differences sheet
Can Oxygen bond with itself? Why or why not, and what type of bond is this?
yes, they can make a covalent bond because they can share their two unpaired electrons to fill the outer layer
How do you write the formula for a binary compound formed ionically?
1)write symbol of element w/ a + exidation number or charge
2) write symbol of element w/ - oxidation number
3) charges must balence(cross method)
How do you write the name for a binary ionic compound?
1)write name of + ion
2) If + ion can form more than 1 oxidation #, determine oxidation # from formula and wrte in roman numerals, if not, step 3
3)write root name of - ion,
4) add ide
