Force

A push or pull on an object that can cause it to change motion.

Gravity

The force that pulls two objects toward one another because of their mass, such as toward the center of the earth.

Gravity and the moon

An object weighs 1/6 as much on the moon as on the earth because the moon has less gravity than Earth.

Friction

A force that slows down or stops moving objects such as a soccer ball in motion. Friction occurs when two objects rub against each other like a bike's brakes against the tires.

Potential energy

Energy that an object has because of position, for example, a child sitting at the top of a slide.

Kinetic energy

Energy of motion (potential energy changes to kinetic energy when movement begins as when the child actually slides down the slide).

Chemical energy

Energy that comes form chemical changes in batteries, gasoline, or the foods you eat.

Work

The result of a force moving an object. If there is no movement, there is no work. If you are lifting or moving a heavier object, you are doing more work than if you are lifting or moving a lighter object the same distance.

Simple Machines

Machines made of only one or two parts. They make work easier.

Wedge

A simple machine that has slanted sides such as a nail or knife.

Inclined Plane

A simple machine with a flat surface and one end higher than the other, such as a ramp.

Compound Machine

A machine made up of two or more simple machines.

Complex Machine

A machine made of many simple and compound machines. Most of them are run by electricity or fuels.
