scientific methods

ways that scientists perform investigations.

experiment

an investigation in which all of the conditions are controlled

variable

any condition in an experiment that can be changed

control

the setup to which you will compare all the others

predict

to make a statement, based on information, about a future event

3 types of investigations?

1.experiments

2. repeated observations

3. using models

when do you use the type of investigation: experiments?

use an experiment when you can control all the conditions of the investigations. Study what happens to a group of samples that are all the same except for one difference.

when do you use the type of investigation: repeated observations?

Repeated observations are used to study processes in nature that they can observe but can't control.

when do you use the type of investigation: using models?

Models are used when scientists cannot experiment on the real thing. Helps scientists investigate things that are large, expensive or uncontrollable

what are three types of models?

1. shake table

2. computer simulation

3. two dimensional

when is a line graph used?

show change over time

when is a bar graph used?

compares things or groups of things. Use them when your data is in categories.

when is a circle graph used?

they compare parts to the whole. They show fractions and percentages.

when is a diagram used?

shows data that doesn't include numbers.

Does a hypothesis need to be testable?

yes

If the results of an experiment don't support a hypothesis, what do you do?

you should repeat the experiment to check for errors
