Abrasion
The process of scraping or weathering away.
Acid Rain
Rainfall made sufficiently acidic by atmosphere pollution.
Beach
Pebbly or sandy shore.
Bedrock
Solid rock underlaying loose deposits such as soil or alluvium.
Carbonation
Dissolves carbon dioxide in a liquid.
Chemical Weathering
The erosion or disintegration of rocks, etc., caused by chemical reactions.
Climate
The wether conditions in an area.
Deflation
The action or process of deflating or being deflated.
Dune
A mound or ridge of sand or other loose materials formed by wind.
Erosion
The process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents.
Exfoliation
Come apart or be shed from a surface in scales or layers.
Groundwater
Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock.
Humus
The organic component of soil.
Karst Topography
A landscape that is characterized by numerous caves, sinkholes, fissures, and underground streams. Karst topography usually forms in regions of plentiful rainfall where bedrock consists of carbonate-rich rock, such as limestone, gypsum, or dolomite, that is easily dissolved. Surface streams are usually absent from karst topography.
Loam
A rich, friable soil containing a relatively equal mixture of sand and silt and a somewhat smaller proportion of clay
Mass Movement
An organized effort by a large number of people, especially those not forming part of the elite of a given society, to bring about pervasive changes in existing social, economic, or political institutions, frequently characterized by charismatic leadership.
Mechanical Weathering
The erosion or breakdown of rock into smaller fragments by natural physical agents with no chemicals involved; also called disintegration
Moraine
A ridge, mound, or irregular mass of unstratified glacial drift, chiefly boulders, gravel, sand, and clay.
Oxidation
The process or result of oxidizing.
Parent Material
The underlying geological material.
Runoff
Something that drains or flows off, as rain that flows off from the land in streams.
Soil
The portion of the earth's surface consisting of disintegrated rock and humus.
Soil Profile
A vertical succession of horizons, commonly lettered A, B, C (beginning at the surface), that have been subjected to soil-forming processes, chiefly leaching and oxidation.
Weathering
The various mechanical and chemical processes that cause exposed rock to decompose.
