What is energy?
The ability to do work or cause change.
How are kinetic and potenial energy related?
Add them together-mechanical energy; when one increases the other decreases.
How are work, power, and energy related?
Work = transfer of energy (same units)
Power = rate at which work is done
Power = rate at which energy is transferred
What is the law of conservation of energy?
States that energy cannot be created or destroyed.
What are the six different forms of energy?
Mechanical-
Thermal-
Chemical-
Electrical-
Nuclear-
Electromagnetic-
How are fossil feuls related to the sun's energy?
Ancient plants store energy from the
sun---> become fossil feuls
How is the energy in coal released?
By a chemical reaction
What are the energy conversions involved in the formation of coal?
Anicent plants and animals transform electromagnetic energy from the sun to stored chemical energy. Their remains become coal. Millions of years later, they are burnt (combustion) and go from chemical to thermal to mechanical to electrical energy which we use.
