The 4 main layers of the atmosphere are:
Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere.
What is thermal conduction?
The transfer of thermal energy through a material.
What is convection?
The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas.
What is radiation?
The transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves.
What are high and low air density?
The less the density, the lower the air pressure. The higher the density, the higher the air pressure.
What is air pressure?
It is the measure of the force with which air molecules push on a surface.
What are polar easterlies?
They are wind belts that extend from the poles to 60 degrees latitude in both hemispheres.
What are prevailing westerlies?
They are wind belts that are found between 30 and 60 degrees latitude in both hemispheres.
What are horse latitudes?
They are the places on earth at about 30 degrees north and south latitudes where sinking air creates an area of high pressure. The winds at these locations are weak.
What are trade winds?
They are winds that blow from 30 degrees latitude almost to the equator.
What are the percentages of each gas in our atmosphere?
78% Nitrogen
21% Oxygen
1% Other Gases
What is ozone?
It is the layer of ozone gases in the stratosphere that block out the sun's UV rays. It could also be the ozone gases that come from pollution too.
What is land breeze?
A coastal breeze blowing at night from land to sea.
What is sea breeze?
A thermally produced wind blowing from a cool ocean surface onto adjoining warm land.
What is global warming?
It is the warming of the earth due to an increased amount of greenhouse gases in the air capturing heat.
What is the greenhouse effect?
It is when a filter of sorts allows the sun's energy and heat to come in but does not allow it to escape from out of the filter.
