What are all living things made of? |
Cells |
|
How can you see cells? |
Only by using a microscope |
|
What parts do cells have in common? |
Cell membrane= surrounds the cell. It is semi-permeable, this means it controls what enters and leaves the cell.
Cytoplasm= made of liquid (water) with organelles moving in it.
Nucleus= controls all if the activities in the cell.
Vacuole= this stores water, salt, sugar, waste and it is temporary in an animal cell. It is large and permeable in a plant cell. |
|
What do plant cells have? |
Cell wall= the outside of the membrane. It is fully permeable. It gives shape+support to the cell.
Chloroplasts= these contain the pigment chlorophyll. This is used to trap light from the sun to make food for the plant during photosynthesis.

What is a microscope used for? |
To examine the little cells in detail as they are too small to be seen without it.
|
|
What are the parts of the microscope? |
The Eyepiece: where we look through, it has a lens that magnifies x10.
The 3 Objective Lenses: low power, medium power and high power magnification.
The Glass Slide: where you put the cell and the slide is placed on the stage.
The Cover Slip: when the cells are stained, the cover slip is lowered on the cell, gently to avoid trapping air bubbles. Excess stain is removed using a strip of filter paper. The Coarse Focus Wheel: moves the stage up and down which allows us to focus on the cells more clearly. |
|
What stain is used to examine cheek cells (animal cells)? |
The Methylene Blue Stain |
|
What stain is used to examine the onion cell (plant cell)? |
The Iodine Stain |
|
Explain Cell Organisation. |
All living things are made of cells. The cells group together to carry out different functions. |
|
How is a tissue formed? |
A tissue is formed when similar cells work together for a particular function e.g. blood, muscle. |
|
How is an organ formed? |
An organ is formed when a group of tissues work together to carry out a particular function e.g heart, kidney. |
|
How is a system formed? |
When organs work together to carry out a particular function e.g circulatory nervous system |
|
How is an organism made? |
An organism is made up of all the systems working together e.g humans. |
|
When does growth occur? |
Growth occurs when cells divide. |
