Thrust |
*Forward Arrow* The engines, or propellers on an airplane create thrust. And if the thrust, is greater than the drag, then the plane will speed up and move forward. |
|
Lift |
*Up Arrow* Most of the lift in an aircraft is generated by the wings. If the force of lift is greater than the weight (gravity) then lift will occur. |
|
Weight |
*Down Arrow* (Gravity) The weight of a plane affects the lift. A plane with more weight will require greater thrust. When the weight and lift of a plane are equal it will fly at a constant height and velocity. |
|
Drag |
*Backwards Arrow* The engines, or propellers on an airplane create thrust. If the thrust is greater than the drag, then the plane will speed up. If the drag is greater than the thrust, then the plane will slow down. |
|
Airfoil |
Fast moving air = low air pressure Slow moving air = high air pressure The air travelling over airfoil shape must travel faster because it has a greater distance to go. Therefore, there is less pressure exerted down the wing. The slower moving air underneath the wing exerts more pressure pushing upon the wing, thus creating lift. |
|
Bernoulli's Principle |
Bernoulli's Principle states that as the speed of a moving fluid such as liquid or gas increases, the pressure within that fluid decreases. |
