why do we need nitrogen?

-to make amino acids in proteins

explain the nitrogen cycle

1) plants get nitorgen from soil, so nitrogen in air has to be turned into nitrates before plants can use it

2) nitorgen compunds then passed along food chain as animals eat plants

3) decomposers break down protein in rotting plants and animals into ammonia

- this returns nitrogen comppunds to soil, so nitrogen in these organisms in reclycled

wht does nitrifing bacteria do?

forms ammonia in decaying mattrs into nitrates

what is denitrifing bacteria?

turn nitrates back into n2 gas

what is nitrogen fixing bacteria?

turn astomospheric n2 into nitrogen compounds that plants can use
