What is a cell?
the smallest unit that can preform the functions of life
what is microscopy?
the science of using microscopes to view samples and objects
what is an organelle?
a specialized structure in a cell
what is a micrograph?
a photograph taken with a microscope.
What are the three components to the cell theory?
-all living things are made up of one of more cells
-cells are created from preexisting cells -the cell is the basic organizational unit of life |
What is the function of the Nucleolus?
involved in the making of protein
What is the function of the nucleus?
controls cell activity
What is the function of the chromosome?
contains genetic information
What is the function of the mitochondria?
provides energy
What is the function of the cell membrane?
forms a barrier between in inside and the outside of a cell
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
fluid filled space of the cell which contains water, sugar and other proteins essential for the cell
What is the function of the ribosome?
builds and produces protein
What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum?
transports materials made in the cell
What is the function of the golgi apparatus?
prepares protein for transportation out of the cell
What is the function of the lysosomes?
breaks down larger molecules
What is the function of the centriole?
creates fibers that help to separate the chromosomes during cell division
What is the function of the cell wall?
the non living outside of the cell. provides support
What is the function of the chloroplast?
created energy for a plant cell using glucose.
What is the function of the vacuole?
stores protein one large in a plant cell, many small in animal cell
What is the function of the flagellum?
moves the animal cell
What is the function of the cilia?
little hairs on the outside of a cell which capture nutrients to absorb in the cell
What is the function of the vesicles?
transport and store substances
What is the function of the cytoskeleton?
provides support
How many sets of chromosomes does the average person have?
23 sets
What is DNA?
material found in the cell nucleus that contains genetic information
What are genes?
a segment of DNA that controls protein production
What are the four building block molecules that create DNA?
AdenineThymineCytosimeGuanine
What is unique about all of the proteins created by DNA?
the proteins each have a specific job
What are enzymes?
proteins that speed up chemical reactions in your body
What is DNA screening?
the process of testing ones DNA to see if they have genetic disorders
How can you tell if a fetus will have down syndrome?
by taking cells out of a fetus, you can check to see the number of chromosomes. If chromosome 21 has 3 instead of the usual 2, the child will have down syndrome
How can you test a baby for PKU?
by taking blood from a baby you can test for certain types of enzymes. If the baby does not have this enzyme then they will have a build up of protein in their blood.
What is huntington disease?
when a person around 40 starts to lose any ability to function
What is a transgenic organism?
an organism thats genes have been modified by the insertion of other genes
What is cloning?
the process of creating identical genetic copies of an organism
How does cloning work?
An egg cell from one organism is extracted and the nucleus is taken out. The egg cell and another cell are electricuted to combine then placed in a uterus to grow.
What is a mutation?
a change in the usual order of ATCG
What are mutagens?
a factor that can cause a mutation
