The Use and Abuse of drugs

.

What is a Drug?

A drug is a substance that alters the way your body works.

What is a placebo?

It is a capsule with nothing in it and it is used in double blind trials. Sometimes the placebo will contain a different drug, already used to treat the decease (this is so the patient isn't deprived of treatment during the trial).

What is a double blind drug trial?

In human trials, scientists can use a DBT to see just how effective the new medicine is. They are either given the placebo or the the new medicine. The doctor and the patient don't know who received what.

What are the stages of development for a drug

Pre-clinical development = The new medicine goes under many tests on animals to investigate it

Phase 1 trials = The drug is tested on 50-100 healthy volunteers to find a healthy dose

Phase 2 trials = The drug is tested in 200-400 patients to see whether it works or has any unacceptable side effects

Phase 3 trials = The drug is tested in 3,000+ patients and compared with a placebo (usually a DBT).

Regulatory reviews = All the data about the drug is reviewed by a regulatory authority. If the benefits outweigh any risks it is licensed as a drug that decease or condition.

Drug launch = The drug continues to be studied to make sure it doesn't cause any further side effects.
