Define Astronomy |
The scientific study of stars, planets, and other celestial objects |
Define rotation |
Rotation is the Earth spinning on an imaginary axis. It is spinning on an angle of 23.5. 1 rotation is 1 day. |
Define revolution |
One complete orbit around the sun |
Define Orbit |
Path a planet takes around a star, or a moon, or satellite takes around a planet.
Define Axis |
The line connecting the north pole with the south pole. The earth rotates on its axis. |
Retrograde Motion |
The apparent loop-like motion of planets as seen from Earth. |
Define investigation |
Finding answers to questions by performing fair tests. |
Define Hypothesis |
Predictions about the result of an experiment/
Define independent variable |
The variable that we change during an investigation.
Define dependent variable |
The variable that we use to measure the result of the investigation.
Define controlled variable |
The variables that have to be kept the same, in an investigation to make it a fair test.
State the order of the planets in the solar system |
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. |
Torrid |
Tropical zones near the equator, light from the sun shines directly on earth and heats ground. |
Describe difference between terrestrial and gas giant planets |
Terrestrial planets are rocky and hard. Gas giants are balls of gas with a small rocky core. |
Why is Pluto a dwarf planet now
Pluto is a dwarf planet because it doesn't have enough gravity to clear away dust etc. |
Define Meteor |
A meteoroid that burns up in the Earth's atmosphere. |
Define Meteorite |
A meteoroid big enough to reach the surface of the Earth without burning up in the Earth's atmosphere. |
Define Geocentric Model |
The model that involved Earth being in the centre of the universe, and the Sun, moon, planets and stars revolved around it. |
Define Heliocentric Model |
The model that involved the sun being in the centre of the universe and the earth, moon, planets and stars revolved around it. |
Define Constellation |
A group of starts that forms a recognisable pattern in the sky. |
Define Planisphere |
A star map that will help you locate particular stars in the sky. |
Frigid |
Polar zones closer to the poles, where the sunlight hits the Earth and spreads over the area. these places are cooler. |
Temperate |
Temperate zones are in between frigid and torrid zones. Perth is a temperate zones. |
Sun |
Made of Hydrogen and Helium. Dark patches are sun spots, cooler areas of gas. Solar flares are hot spots. When the solar wind strikes, an aurora is formed. |
Mercury |
Little atmosphere, many crater from meteorite strikes, temperature = 400 degrees. no air. |
venus |
Evening star. Bright in sky because of sulphuric acid clouds. temperatures are 500 degrees. air pressure= 90 times of earths. |
Earth |
Presence fo liquid water allows life to exist. |
Moon |
no water or atmosphere exists, cratered. |
Mars |
Red colour, large volcano 3 times as tall as mt. everest. |
Jupiter |
Made of Hydrogen and Helium. over 50 moons, 1000 times of earth. red spot is tropical storm has been raging for 300 yrs. |
Saturn |
surrounded by rings made of ice and dust. |
Uranus |
4 rings and 15 moons. |
Neptune |
two moons, triton and Nereid. |
Comets |
Made of rock & ice. elliptical orbit around sun. |
