Define pollutants
Air around us may contain particles of pollen, dust, soot and gases other than those that should be present in air. These are called pollutants or impurities.
Name the effect of pollutants on humans and their surroundings.
Pollutants may cause sneezing, asthma and allergies. They may affect lungs, skin and other organs. They may also destroy many types of plants and animals.

What is acid rain?
Rain mixed with sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides is called acid rain.

When coal or petrol burns they release sulphur dioxide. This can dissolve in the moisture present in air to form an acide. This acid comes down with rain as acide rain.

Lightning can cause atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen to combine forming some oxides of nitrogen. These too can produce aiocds when they dissolve in moisture, These acids come down to earth as acid rains.
What is smog?
A combination of smoke and fog in big cities during winters, creating major traffic problems. It contains oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbons which cause severe breathing problems.
