What kind of ions do acids pproduce?
H+
What is the pH value of a base?
ph>7
A base produces ____ ions
OH-
OH- is a _____ ion
hydroxide
H+ is a ____ ion
hydrogen
H30 is a ____ ion
hydronium
The front end of many acids contain what element?
Hydrogen
What is sour taste a charactaristic of?
aicds
What effect does an acid have on metal?
it corrodes it
What does corrodes mean?
eats away
Acids have a pH of what?
pH<7
What is a neutral pH?
7
The pH scale ranges from what?
0-14
An acid added to a base produces....?
water and a salt
Bases taste ____?
bitter
Bases feel _____?"
Slippery
What is a substance which changes color in the presence of an acid or a base?
an indicator
An alkaline substance has a pH of?
pH>7
What do buffers do?
neutralize acids
The term that refers to all of the chemical changes that occur in the body?
metabolism
When molecules break apart in water, they are said to have ______?
dissociated
Describe how you find the concentration of a base
Poured 25 mLs of base into a clear plastic cup. Then we filled the beret to 50 mLs with 5% vinegar. We added two drops of phenolphthalein to the base (it turns pink). We slowly dripped the acid into the base until it turns from pink to clear. Determine the volume of the acid by subtracting 50 from the amount of vinegar currently in the beret. that is the volume of the acid (in the cup). Then you do Na*Ca=Vb*Ca
What is the formula for finding the concentration or volume of an acid or base?
Va*Ca=Vb*Cb
What is NaOH? (acid or base?)
base
What is HCl? (acid or base)
acid
Why would something be an acid?
It has more H+ ions than OH- ions
What is H+ (H30)? (acid or base?)
acid
What is OH-? (acid or base?)
base
What is BTB?
An indicator.
What color did BTB turn to when it is an acid?
yellow
What color did BTB turn to when it was a base?
blue
What is NH3? (acid or base?)
neutral
What are three major acids?
HCl (hydrochloric)
H2SO4 (sulfuric)
Nitric (HNO3)
What are 3 properties of acids?
-sour
-clear
-corrodes metal
What do acids produce in water?
H30 (H+)
aka hydronium ions
What is pH?
The measure of acidity or alkalinity in a solution
What do bases produce in water?
hydroxide ions (OH-)
What are three major bases?
NaOH, NH4OH, Ca(OH)2
what are four properties of bases?
clear liquids
-bitter
-slippery
-emulsifies fat
How do you neutralize acids?
you raise pH of acids by adding a base
How do you neutralize bases?
add an acid
Why is the water molecule so important to organisms?
cells are mad up mostly of water and its required for almost every metabolic reaction in the body
What ions form when water dissociates.
H+ and OH-
hydrogen and hydroxide
What is meant by the term alkalinity?
basic
What is produced by the body to help neutralize acidic conditions?
buffers
Acids have more _____ ions and taste _____ and can be _______
H+m sour, sorrosive
Bases contain more ____ ions then _____ ions.
OH-, H+
____ fluids are acid in the body and must be ____ by _____
Digestive, neutralized, buffers
Bases taste _P___ and feel ))))
bitter, slippery
What is neautralization?
adding an acid to a base to make the pH be 7
What 2 things are produced by neautralization?
a salt and water
Neutralization keeps our pH at ____ and is an example of maintaining _____
7, homeostasis
What is homeostasis?
the process of our bodies maintaining neutral pH so that proteins can work properly without being unfolded
What chemicals does the body produce to keep a neutral pH?
buffers
Acidic and basic conditions occur due to ____ reactions in the body
metabolic (chemical)
What is dissociation?
When the force of an attraction is so great between molecules that the molecules are seperated from each other
What is an ion?
a charged atom or molecule
What is the hydronium ion?
an ion that forms when free H+ ions react with another water molecule
How do you measure for acidity or alkalinity?
measure the relative amount of H+ and OH- ions dissolved in a solution
What is the name for Oh- ions?
hydroxide ion
What is the name for the H+ ion?
hydrogen
Why do proteins need a near neautral pH?
for proteins, if it is ot neautral, proteins can change their shape and stop working
