What does niche mean?

Role of an organism, and its place and function.

Example of niche

Deer, lives in foothills and grasslands. Lives in small groups and eats grass.

What are the two types of niche?

Broad niche/generalist and narrow niche/specialist

Define broad niche

Can live in variety of climates, can't eat a variety of food sources, adapt to changes in the ecosystem. Can spread of large areas, cannot compete as well with specialist for the same food source.

Define narrow niche

Very good at existing in a specific climate/ecosystem, only specific food source. Cannot adapt to change. Many different species to live in same ecosystem, limit the growth of single species
