What is a Cell?

The cell is the basic structure and function in all living things.

Just like this school is made of bricks, all living things are made of cells!

This idea is called the cell theory.

What is a theory?

A theory is an idea supported by evidence

What is a fact?

A fact is something that is true

Microscopic

Cells are microscopic.

They can only be seen under a microscope.

They can’t be seen by the eye alone.

When were cells discovered?

It was not until the 1600’s that cells were discovered.

Robert Hooke was the first to observe cells.

What are the two kinds of cells that have different structures?

1. Prokaryotic

2. Eukaryotic

Prokaryotic cells

Prokaryotic cells:

Have no nucleus or organelles.

Unicellular life is prokaryotic.

Example: amoeba, bacterias like samonella

Eukaryotic cells

Eukaryotic cells:

Have a nucleus and organelles.

Body cells of organisms are eukaryotic.

Example: skin cells, cheek cells, and muscle cells

Organelles

Organelles carry out the life functions of cells

Plasma membrane

Plasma membrane:

The outside of an animal cell.

It is selectively permeable.

This means it only allows certain materials to pass into and out of the cell.

Diffusion

Diffusion:

the movement of molecules from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration (spreading out)

Osmosis

Osmosis:

the diffusion of water. The movement of water from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration

Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm:

Fluid inside the cell, made up of a network called the cytoskeleton which holds the organelles in place. Allows for the transportation of materials

Nucleus

Nucleus:

The Control Center of the cell. It contains most of the cell’s DNA or genetic material. It contains the information needed for protein synthesis (making protein)
