Mixture
a combination of substances in which individual substances retain their own properties. They can be liquids, solids or gases. Example: mixing salt and sugar.
Organic Compound
Compounds that contain carbon. There are 4 types in living things: Carbohydrates, Lipids, Protein and Nucleic acid.
Enzyme
Proteins that speed up the chemical reactions in cells without being changed.
Inorganic Compounds
Organisms made from elements other than carbon, for example, water.
Diffusion
The movement of molecules from an area where there are many to an area where there are few. It results from the random movement of particles.
Equillibrium
When molecules of a substance are spread evenly throughout a space. Molecules contiunue to move though to maintain this equillibrium
Osmosis
Diffusion of water through a cell membrane.
Passive Transport
The movement of particles across the cell membrane by diffusion-requiring no energy.
Active Transport
When materials require energy to move through a cell membrane.
Metabolism
The total of all chemical activities of an organism that enable it to stay alive, grow and reproduce.
Producer
An organism that make their own food, like plants for example.
Consumer
An organism that can't make its own food and rely on others for their food
