Precipitation

Any form of water that falls from the clouds and reaches the Earth's surface.

Rain

The most common type of precipitation. Must be .5 mmm in diameter to be considered rain.

Sleet

When rain falls through a layer of air that is below freezing point and they freeze into a solid. Sleet is smaller than .5 mmm.

Freezing Rain

Rain that falls into the freezing air just above the surface, or onto surface that is below freezing. Also may be referred to as glazing (freezes on contact).

Snow

Water vapor that has condensed below the freezing point. They all have unique patterns and six sides.

Hail

Round pellets of ice larger than .5 mmm. They only form inside cumulonimbus clouds during a thunderstorm. Strong up draft allow the freezing, collection of moisture, and refreezing of the hail stone.

Drought

A period of weather that is drier than usual.

Cloud Seeding

Tiny crystals of silver iodine and dry ice are sprinkled into clouds in order to try to create condensation and rain.

Rain Gauge

An open ended can or tube that collect rainfall for measurement.
