Cellular Respiration

Chemical process where mitochondria break down food molecules to produce ATP;Three stages are glycolosis, citric acid cycle and electron transport chain.

Three stages of Cellular Respiration

Glycolysis:anaerobic (no oxygen)

Citric acid cycle and electron transport chain:aerobic(requires energy)

Glycolosis

Series of anaerobic chemical reactions in cytoplasm that breaks down glucose into pyruvic acid;forms a net profit of 2 ATP molecules

Citric Acid Cycle

Series if chemical reactions that breaks down glucose and produce ATP;energizes electron carriers that pass energized electrons on to the electron transport chain.

Fermentation

Two types: lactic acid and alcoholic

Metabolic process that converts sugar to acids, gases or alcohol.Occurs in yeast and bacteria but also in oxygen-starved muscle cells

Cell Respiration

Process of fermentation, glycolysis,Citric acid (Krebs)Cycle, electron transport chain

How do cells obtain energy from cellular respiration

Glycolysis

Structure of mitochondrion to events in cellular respiration

Mitochondria breaks down food molecules to produce ATP (Cellular Respiration)

ATP (Adenosine triphosphate)

Energy-storing molecule in cells composed of an adenosine molecule,a ribose sugar and 3 phosphate groups;energy is stored in the molecule's chemical bonds and can be used quickly and easily by cells.

ADP(Adenosine Diphisphate)

Molecule formed from the breaking off of a phosphate group for ATP;Results in a large release of energy that is used for biological reactions

Photosynthesis

Process plants use to trap sun's energy and build carbohydrates, called glucose, that store energy.

Equation:6CO2 + 6H2O + Sunlight -> C6H12O6 + 6O2

Light-Dependent and Independent Reactions

Light-Dependent:Phase of photosynthesis where light energy is converted to chemical energy in form of ATP

Light-Independent:Phase of photosynthesis where energy from light-dependent reactions is used to produce glucose and additional ATP molecules.

Photosynthesis Vs. Cellular respiration

Both:Use electron carriers and a cycle of chemical reactions to form ATP,Use electron transport chain to form ATP and to create a chemical and a concentration gradient of H+ within cell

Photosynthesis:Produces high-energy carbohydrates and oxygen from sun's energy

Cellular Respiration:Uses oxygen to break down carbohydrates to do ATP and compounds with a lower level of energy.
