What is the shape of the planets' orbits
Elliptical
What causes day and night?
The earth spins. When the earth faces the Sun, it is day. When the same part fo the earth faces away from the Sun, it is night.
What is the season in the Northern Hemisphere when the North Pole points most directly toward the Sun?
Summer
How is the climate near the equator different from the climate near the poles? What causes this difference?
The amount of sunlight an area receives creates its climate. The equator receives the most direct sunlight. The Sun's rays are more spread out when they hit the poles. This causes the poles to have a colder climate than the earth.
List the order of the planets from nearest to farthest from the Sun.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pickles |
Why do the planets have years of different lengths?
Because planets are at different distances from the Sun and have different lenght of orbits.
Name the planets that have solid surfaces and give another detail about each.
Mercury Has almost no atmosphere
Venus Has a thick cloudy atmosphere made of poisonous gases Mars Has a very thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide. It has large volcanoes and polar ice caps Pluto Is made of rock and Ice. It has moon the same size as it is....called a "double planet" |
Compare and contrast the inner planets with the outer planets, exluding Pluto. List at least two ways they are similar and at least two differences
They are part of the Solar System
They all orbit the Sun The inner planets are closer to the sun. Their orbits are smaller Outer planets are further from the sun They move slower. |
Describe a comet's orbit and the changes that occur to a comet during an orbit
When its
Two differences between comets and asteroids
Asteroid is a a rocky moass that orbits the Sun
Asteroids orbit in the asteroid belt Comet is a frozen mass of ice and dust Comets are much smaller than planets |
