What is the difference between climate and weather?
Weather is a condition of the atmosphere for a short period of time, climate is the average weather over a long period of time
List five factors that affect climate
Latitude, wind pattern, mountains, large bodies of water, and ocean currents
How does latitude affect climate?
The farther a place is from the equator, the colder the climate.
What causes the earth to have seasons?
The tilt of the earth's axis
Why do places near the tropics have very little seasonal change?
They get direct sunlight all year round
What effect does elevation have on climate?
The higher the elevation, the cooler the climate
How do mountains affect precipitation for an area?
As wind passes over an area, rain clouds form on the windward side, and the other side stays dry
What are the prevailing wind for North America?
The westerlies
What is the microclimate? Give two examples:
1.the climate of a small area
2.cities and mountain tops |
What are two causes of long term climate change?
1.changes in the earth's orbit
2.change in the tilt of the earth's axis |
What gas causes global warming?
Carbon dioxide
What are two consequences of global warming?
1.rising sea level
2.changing weather patterns |
How is human activity increasing the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
Burning fossil fuels, and
Cutting down and burning forests |
How do ocean current affect climate?
Warm ocean currents can make a place warmer ( gulf stream)
Cold ocean currents can make place cooler ( California current) |
