What was the Triple Alliance?

The alliance between Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary. Organised by Chancellor Bismarck. Germany had taken Alsace-Lorraine from France (Franco-Prussian War, 1870-71). Germany created the defensive alliance to isolate France and strengthen Germany.

Franco-Russian Alliance

France was able to sign an agreement with Russia. The Russian Tsar would have preferred to ally with Germany but the Kaiser was not interested. It took two years of talks. It was a defensive alliance which was strengthened when France loaned money to Russia for railway projects.
