1. -How did Paul seek to persuade his hearers concerning Jesus?
-Why did he do this?
-By using both the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
-Because fulfilled prophesy, which proves the inspiration of the Scriptures, appeals to the intellect, while the Law appeals to the conscience. Prophecy produces faith in God's word and the Law produces knowledge of sin.
2. What is it that actually converts/revives the soul? (Psalm 19:7)
"The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple."
3. Why do you think the preaching of the cross seems foolish AND offensive to an unregenerate sinner?
The preaching of the cross seems:
-Foolish, because it won't make any sense without the sinner knowing WHAT he has done wrong.
-Offensive because it insinuates the sinner has broken God's Law when he doesn't think he has.
4. (Therefore) What should someone be told before he hears the Good News of his fine being paid?
Before sharing the Good News:
-Take them through the God's moral law (10 commandments) to show him he has offended a holy God.
-He must first precisely understand HOW he has violated God's law and be convinced he is a Transgressor. THEN the Good News will make sense.
5. What does it mean that the Law "silences every mouth"? (Rom. 3:19)
-God's Law stops sinners (everyone) from justifying themselves by thinking they aren't really a bad person or they are not as bad as other people.
-The Law shows them their own sin according to The Holy Standard and leaves them guilty before God. -(Rom. 3:19 "Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.")
6. What are the four functions of the Law. (Rom. 3:19, 20, 7:7, Gal. 3:24)
The 4 functions of the Law:
-It stops sinners from justifying themselves. (Rom. 3:19)
-It helps the whole world realize that they are guilty. (Rom. 3:20)
-It brings the knowledge of sin. (Rom. 7:7)
-It leads us to Christ. (Gal. 3:24)
7. What is the Biblical definition of sin? (1 John 3:4)
The biblical definition of sin is breaking God’s Law.
