- Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness where contact with reality and insight are impaired, an example of psychosis.

What are the two major systems for the for the classification of mental disorder?


How do these vary in their classification of schizophrenia?

-World health Organisation's International Classification of Disease edition 10 (ICD-10) and the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical manual edition 5 (DSM-5).


-DSM-5= one positive symptom must be present for diagnosis


-ICD-10= two or more negative symptoms; recognizes a range of sub types i.e. catatonic schizophrenic (disturbance in movement leading the sufferer to be immobile or overactive).

What are positive symptoms of schizophrenia? Give examples and elaborate.

-Additional experiences beyond those of ordinary existence


-Hallucinations= Unusual sensory experiences. Can relate to events in the environment or not at all. They can be experienced in relation to any sense e.g a sufferer may see people or animals that are not there.


-Delusions= Also known as paranoia; irrational beliefs. These can take many forms. Common delusions involve being an important historical, political or religious figure (Jesus). They also commonly involve being persecuted perhaps by the government or aliens. Sufferers may believe that they or a part of them is under external control. Although sufferers usually aren't aggressive some delusions can lead to aggression.
