Breathing
The mechanical movement of air into and out of your lungs
External Respiration
The exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the blood, which occurs in the lungs
Internal Respiration
The exchange of gases between the blood and the body's cells
Trachea
The epiglottis allows air to pass from the larynx in a long tube in the chest cavity called the Trachea, or wind pipe.
Pharynx
This is where filtered air passes through, located in the upper throat
Larynx
-commonly known as the voice box
-functions as an airway to lungs -provides us with a way of communicating |
Epiglottis
-A flap of tissue that covers the larynx
-prevents food particles from entering the respiratory tubes |
Cilia
-Hairlike structures that filter dust and other particles from the airways.
-they line the nasal passageways as well as other respiratory areas |
Bronchi
The two larger tubes that branch out of the trachea and lead to the lungs
Bronchiole
The bronchi break into even smaller tubes called the bronchiole
Alveolus
The bronchioles travels to a smaller passageway with air sacs called the alveolus.
-only one cell thick -surrounded by thin capillaries |
Lungs
-largest organs in the respiratory system
-where gas exchange takes place |
Diaphragm
-seperates the heart, lungs, and ribs from abdomin
-contacts rhythmically to the way you breath (inhale: tighten, exhale: loose) It does this to increase space in your chest cavity |
ATP
-adenosine triphosphate
-"energy currency of life" -High energy molecule that stores the energy we need to do things. |
Asthma
Respiratory pathways become irritated and bronchioles constrict
Bronchitis
Respiratory pathways become infected, resulting in coughing and production of mucus
Emphysema
Alveoli break down, resulting in reduced surface area needed for gas exchange with alveoli's blood capillaries
Pneumonia
Infection of the lungs that causes the alveoli to collect mucus (>_<) material
Pulmonary Tuberculosis
A specific bacterium infects the lungs, resulting in less elasticity of the blood capillaries surrouding the alveoli , thus decreasing effective gas exchange between the air and blood
Lung Cancer
Uncontrolled cell growth in lung tissue can lead to a persistent cough, shortness of breath, bronchitis, or pneumonia, and can lead to death. :O
