To strengthen healthy adult mode. Weaken maladaptive coping modes. Heal EM schemas. Break patterns. Get patient's core emotional needs met in everyday life. |

Define early maladaptive schemas. |
Stable and enduring themes regarding oneself and one's relationship with others, which is developed during childhood and elaborated throughout one's lifetime and is very dysfunctional. They are self-perpetuating and not always in our awareness. An event triggers the schema so it dominates thoughts/feelings creating negative emotions and behaviours. |

Describe the schema domains. |
Disconnection & rejection: lack of safety and reliability in relationships. Impaired autonomy & achievement: incredibly dependent and insecure. Impaired limits: lack self-discipline. Other directedness: others needs come first. Hypervigilance & inhibition: avoid emotions and needs. |

How do people cope with their EMS? |
Surrender: processes that perpetuate schemas. E.g. self-defeating behaviour, cognitive distortions, compliance, dependence. Over-compensation: behaviours are the opposite of the schema to avoid triggering the schema. E.g. aggression, hostility, dominance. Avoidance: adopt behaviours to avoid triggering schemas and feelings psychological pain. E.g. not thinking about events, blocking painful emotions, avoiding situations that trigger schemas, social withdrawal. |

Describe schema therapy. |
Designed to weaken maladaptive schemas and strengthen healthy behaviours and thinking. Begins with identifying the schemas and then developing a distancing of schema via education. Psychologists then reframe experiences where schemas were formed, teaching an alternate perspective. |
