Schedules of reinforcement

A rule that describes a contingency of reinforcement those environmental arrangements that determine the conditions by which behaviors will produce reinforcement.

Continuous reinforcement (CRF)

The schedule of continuous reinforcement provides reinforcement for each occurrence of behavior.

intermittent reinforcement (INT)

Only select occurrences of behavior produce reinforcement with an intermittent schedule of reinforcement.

Fixed ratio (FR)

A fixed ratio schedule of reinforcement requires the completion of a number of responses to produce a reinforcer.

Post reinforcement pause

The participant does not respond for a period of time following reinforcement.

Variable ratio schedule (VR)

Schedule of reinforcement that requires the completion of a variable number of responses to produce a reinforcer.

Fixed interval schedules

Provides reinforcement for the first response following a fixed duration of time.

Variable interval schedule

Provides reinforcement for the first correct response following the elapse of variable durations of time.

Limited hold

When added to an interval schedule reinforcement remains available for a finite time following the elapse of the FI or VI interval.

Schedule thinning

Changing a contingency of reinforcement by gradually increasing the response rate or the extent of the time interval; it results in a lower rate of reinforcement per responses, time, or both.

Ratio strain

A behavioral effect associated with abrupt increases in ratio requirements when moving from denser to thinner reinforcement schedules; common effects include avoidance, aggression, and unpredictable pauses or cessation in responding.

Concurrent schedules of reinforcement (conc)

Occurs when two or more contingencies of reinforcement operate independently and simultaneously for two or more behaviors.

Concurrent schedules of reinforcement (conc)

Occurs when two or more contingencies of reinforcement operate independently and simultaneously for two or more behaviors.

Multiple schedules of reinforcement (mult)

A compound schedule of reinforcement consisting of two or more basic schedules of reinforcement that occur in an alternating, usually random, sequence; a discriminative stimulus is correlated with the presence or absence of each element of the schedule, and reinforcement is delivered for meeting the response requirements of the element in effect at any time.

Fixed interval schedule effect

Fixed interval schedules generate slow to moderate rate of responding with a pause in responding following reinforcement. Respondent begins to accelerate toward the end of the interval.

Scalloped

Reinforcer magnitude

Manipulating the duration of access to reinforcement.

Reinforcer quality

Manipulating the level of preference of the reinforcer.
