Chromosome

Thread like structure in a cell nucleus made up of many genes. DNA packaged up!

Gene

Section of DNA that codes for a particular protein which results in a particular trait.

Allele

Different forms of a gene. One from the mother and one from the father.

DNA

Complex molecule that carries all the genetic information to build an organism's traits.

Variation

Having different characteristics to the parents.

Can be continuous or discontinuous.

Reproduction

This involves creating new offspring. Sexual means the sex cells must meet and fuse. (Fertilisation) A zygote is formed.

Dominant

The allele (trait) which is always expressed when it is present ( represented by a capital letter)

Recessive

The allele (trait) which is only expressed when the dominant is absent (represented with a lower case letter)

Homozygous

When both alleles are the same

Heterozygous

When the two alleles are different

Pure breeding

means homozygous - the 2 alleles are the same

Genotype

What the alleles are in the indivdual - BB

Phenotype

The physical appearance of the offspring. How the genotype is expressed

Pedigree chart

Chart showing the genotype and phenotype of several generations

Trait

a genetically determined characteristic.
