Generally
South Carolina probate code governs the distribution of property of a decedent's estate to heirs, devisees, and creditors.
Function of probate
Essentially a title clearing function to transfer title from decedent's estate to proper parties.

Clear probate proeprty held by a decedent, determine debts and taxes and pay them before final distribution to heirs or devisees.

Everything is handled by a fiduciary known as the Personal Representative.
Typical timeline
Typically about 1 year to probate from opening of estate to closing.

Time 0 - publication (estate is open) and appointment of Personal Representative

30 Days - heirs and devisees receive notice - PR sends notice to everyone that estate is open

90 days - inventory and appraisement due - PR files inventory of assets and liabilities
