Respected teachers, president and executives, my name is Ivory and I would like to start my presentation off by thanking you for allowing me to have this opportunity to express my thoughts and ideas on why I think I am suitable to become the next student council president.

There is one big question that I’m certain that everyone in this room is thinking of, and that is, “How is Ivory different from the other candidates?” For one, I have only been part of student council for merely half a year in H1. At first glance, this may seem like a disadvantage. I don’t know much about how events are planned or how an idea gets approved.

But I feel that there is actually a benefit in choosing someone who is not familiar with the processes. I have new ideas that I can bring in from an “outsider’s” point of view and because I have been an “outsider” for a while, I have heard many ideas from various people on how they think the student council could be improved. I feel that I am capable of achieving the task of incorporating these ideas into something new, something new that integrates all of the secondary values.

Speaking of school values, what have I done in my time at TES that shows I embody them? I, personally, would like to think there’s quite a lot. Starting off with participation. So far, I have joined and been part of 30 sports teams and ECAs. I am very passionate about sports, am an avid MUN debater and also am an arts and music enthusiast.

Perseverance. Playing in many sports games has taught me to never give up, even when our team is down 20 to 0 in a basketball finals game. I have persevered through not falling asleep in class, even the time when I had history lessons on Mondays after lunch in a dark room in year 7. In addition, I persevered through the 25 exams that I took in IGCSE, and made sure I got the best results that I could muster.

Creativity. I was part of the group that designed the piano we made on values day last year. I have designed posters and brochures for many school or year group events. I have managed to speak 3 different languages in a sentence to my friend without even realising it, in my opinion, one of my proudest achievements and very creative.
Respect and responsibility. To me, they come hand in hand. I have always payed respect to teachers and fellow classmates by participating and listening intently during lessons. I have completed all homework on time to the best of my ability. I have shown respect to the local community by helping out at the library and to the school community by showing my school spirit through cheering on our sports teams at tournaments and games. Because of this, cheering for TES has now become like second nature to me.
This leads me to the next question, how am I going to promote school spirit through the student council? I feel that by having more small events and occasionally bigger ones, we can keep the spirit pumping. From previous years, it seems like the majority of the people enjoyed sporting activities and get excited about it, a simple dodgeball game or a small 3 on 3 basketball game always seem to attract the attentions of many students. In addition, I think that in order to have spirit, we need to start off the day right.
Maybe we can start a TES morning PA system or a morning livestream video where students can sign up to speak or be in the video and talk about the latest news and/or events coming up. This can be played during form time to make the day more cheerful and allow the students and the staff to know more about the things happening at school.

I would like to end my presentation by answering the fundamental question, “why do I want to be the student council president”. I applied to be the student council president because in the past almost six years at TES, I have thoroughly enjoyed my school life. I have come to realise that this is because of the strong community that this school has.

Everyone is so supportive of each other, the older students extremely supportive of the younger ones. When I was in ks3, I have always looked up to the high school students. Many of them I became close friends with because of their willingness to help me out. It was then that I realised that I wanted to be like one of them when I get the chance to in high school.

I want to be the person to pass on the advice that they passed on to me to the rest of the school. I want to be the one to provide the whole school community with a boost of confidence and help students to step out of their comfort zones. I want to be the stepping stone in making this school year one of the best ones TES has seen yet.

Becoming student council president will act as a platform to help me reach this goal. Not only will I be able to give back to the school community, but I can also learn more about myself. With my previous and ongoing leadership experience, I can assure you that if you give me a chance, I will give it my all and show you what I am capable of achieving.

I hope I have convinced you that I am a suitable candidate. Thank you once again for considering me for this position and I wish you have a great weekend!
