process for MFC

for purification and separation of since sulfate from zinc metal:

1.sulfuric acid is warmed in a beaker

2.zinc powder is added bit by bit with constant stirring into the beaker until no further zinc dissolves in the acid

3.the solution is then filtered to remove the excess zinc powder

4.the FILTRATE of aqueous zinc sulfate is then transferred into an evaporating dish and heated over a bunsen flame until the solution is SATURATED.To TEST FOR SATURATION,dip glass rod into the mixture.if solition is saturated, crystals will form on the glass rod.

5.solution is left to cool for crystalisation to take place

6.the solution is then filtered.Zinc sulfate crystals should be rinsed in cold distilled water and dried between sheets of filter paper.

why excess metal is used

excess metal is used so that the acid supplied will be used up

this is needed as unused acid is difficult to remove and will contaminate the pure salt obtained

but excess insoluble substances can be easily removed through filtration

titration process

preparation of sodium sulfate (titration)

1.20CM2 of sodium hydroxide is added to a conical flask using a pipette

2.a few drops of methyl orange is added to the alkaliin the conical flask.the solution will turn yellow

3.the sulfuric acid is added one drop at a time until the solution turns orange

4.the process is repeated but this time withou the methyl orange indicator.

alternative titration

activated carbon is added to the solution and beaten to remove coloured indicator

the solution is then filtered to remove the charcoal

process for precipitation

obtaining lead2sulfate from aqueous lead2nitrate (precipitation)

sodium sulfate solution/dilute sulfuric acid is added to the lead2nitrate solution in a beaker.precipitate is formed.

the solution is then filtered .the precipitate,lead2sulfate is rinsed with distilled water then dried between pieces of filter paper

process for precipitation

obtaining lead2sulfated from SOLID lead2carbonate

must obtain aqueous lead2nitrate first

1.lead2carbonate is added bit by bit into nitric acid with constant stirring until it dissolves no further

2.the mixture is then filtered to remove excess lead2carbonate

3.sodium sulfate solution is then added to the FILTRATE of aq lead2nitrate.a precipitate will be formed

4.the solution is then filtered ,precipitate of lead2 sulfate is then rinsed with distilled water and dried between pieces of filter paper.
