Salbutamol: Preparation
Ampoule containing 5 mg in 2.5 ml.
Salbutamol: Mechanism of action
Salbutamol is a beta 2 adrenergic receptor agonist (stimulator). Stimulating beta 2 adrenegic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle causes bronchodilation.
Salbutamol: Indications
The treatment of bronchospasm (narrowing of the smooth muscles in lower airways). Effect is on the bronchioles causing relief of the bronchospasm.
1. Management and prevention of attacks in mild asthma 2. Treatment of moderate to severe asthma |
Salbutamol: Contraindications
None.
Salbutamol: Onset of effect
3-5 minutes.
Salbutamol: Duration of effect
1-2 hours.
Salbutamol: Common adverse effects
-Tremor
-tachycardia (rapid cardiac rate 160–190\min) -tachydysrhythmia (abnormal rate >100) -headache -hypokalaemia (low potassium) |
Salbutamol: Interactions
Salbutamol will be less effective in the presence of a non-selective beta blocker (such as propranolol).
Salbutamol: Dose and Administration
- By nebuliser in combination with ipratropium.
- Adults and children same dosage for bronchospasm (a wheeze) - 5mg salbutamol by nebuliser in combination with 0.5mg ipratropium - Administer with 8 litres oxygen\min - Repeat continously if severe - except CORD patients - Patients with CORD - alternate 5 min on, 5 min off if SpO2 is >92% |
Salbutamol: Signs and symptoms of bronchospasm
- Wheezing - is when the air is forced through the narrowed bronchioles creating a whistling sound
- Severe SOB - No tmoving much air and unable to speak more than a few words |
Salbutamol: Causes of bronchospasm
-Asthma
-CORD -Anaphylaxis -Burns and smoke inhalation |
