abeam
|
At right angles to the centerline of the boat. 'The mark is abeam."

accidental gybe
|
A gybe which takes place unintentionally.

|
Toward the rear of the boat, or more toward the rear of the boat than something else. 'The mainsheet is aft of the boom vang."

|
Toward the leeward side of the boat. Most commonly used in the expression "Helm's alee!" (when tacking).

In or near the middle of the boat.

apparent wind
|
The wind which you feel on a moving boat. The apparent wind is a combination of boat wind and true wind.

backwind
|
When you backwind a sail (or when it backwinds itself against your wishes) the wind hits it from the wrong side. Backwinding a jib will cause the boat to tum, and backwinding the main will cause the boat to slow down or sail backwards.

A thin piece of wood used to stiffen the roach of the mainsail.

|
The pocket in the leech of the sail into which the batten is inserted.
