when operating the electrical equipment what should always be checked?
always check that the lab working surface is clean and in good condition, all cords and plugs are in good condition, and always report any equipment that is not working peoperly to your teacher
what should you never do unless you are instructed to do so?
never taste, touch, or smell any chemicals unless instructed
why should you never mix any chemicals worked with during an experiment?
don't experiment with any chemicals except as instructed because when combined many of the chemicals used in a lab can be explosive or otherwise dangerous
during an activity what should you do with the containers?
clearly label all containers with the names of the materials you use during the activity
where do the unused chemicals go?
never return unused chemicals to their original containers. follow your instructor's directions for proper disposal and cleanup
how are you supposed to smell the fumes during an experiment?
gently wave your hand over the opening of the container and direct the fumes toward your nose. DO NOT INHALE THE FUMES DIRECTLY FROM THE CONTAINER!

never use unlabeled chemicals
How should broken glass be disposed?
sweep the broken glass into a dustpan and dispose of it in the glass container
what direction should you cut in when you are using a scalpel or razor blade?
when using a scalpel or razor blade always cut away from yourself and others
how should a scalpel be held and replaced?
when working with a scalpel, hold it as you would a pencil when writing. never attempt to replace a scalpel blade. ask your teacher to replace it for you.

animals should be handled only if neccessary

only non-pathogenic strains are to be cultured and all the cultures will be disposed of by the teacher

what is to be done when an experiment is completed?
when an experiment is completed, clean your work area and make sure all of your materials are washed and dried. return all equipment to its proper place
what are the sinks to be used for?
sinks are used to dispose liquid wastes only and all solid wastes should be placed in the trash can
what objects are not to be removed from the classroom?
do not remove ANYTHING from the classroom or lab without permission
