Safe administration of Animal Medicines

- Inappropriate administration can result in potentially serious injury/ side-effects


- Each route of administration has its own difficulties

Oral -> In food administration

- For dogs tablets can be placed in some food and be eaten by the dog without any problem, especially if they are palatable.


- Some medicines have to be given outside of meal times as presence of food interferes with absorption


- In most cases it is acceptable to give the medication with a small amount of food

Oral -> Liquids

- Can be offered in food or water


- In food -> helps if the animal has a gap without food


- Small amount of food as carrier

Topical Products -> Spot-ons

- MUST be applied to the skin



Topical Products -> Creams

- Used on small areas -> wounds


- Gently clean the area with cotton wool to remove any debris to enable the ointment to come into contact with the desired area

- Don't touch eye with end of bottle
