CHARACTERISTICS

Deep stabbing pain into the buttocks and lateral to L5/S1


May radiate into posterior thigh or knee NOT the foot

SYMPTOMS

Pain with prolonged sitting, standing or walking, climbing stairs, turning in bed, unilateral standing pr torsion activities


May not be relieved by rest


Worsens with activity


Tenderness at pubic symphysis may be present: radiating pain into groin and medial thigh, pain with WB

INTERVENTIONS


ACTIVITY MODIFICATIONS

Minimize asymmetrical forces acting on trunk and pelvis


Getting into a car by sitting first then pivoting the legs by keeping the knees together


Side lying by placing pillow between knees and abdomen


Alter sexual positions to avoid full range abduction


Avoid:


Unilateral leg stance


Excessive abduction


Sitting on very soft surfaces


Climbing more than one step at a time


Swinging one leg out of bed


Crossing legs when sitting
