They simplify the music of the Gregorian texts. This becomes the 'Edito Medicea', 1614.

They add a few madrigal-isms/figural-isms.

All churches have to use it ... EXCEPT those using a liturgy older than 200 years. The Bishops.

It's a liturgical piece which goes "Alleluia ..........".

Why is vepres important (musically)?
It's where the most polyphonic bits are still sung.
What types of vepres are there?
- 1st Vepres - sung the day before a festival
- 2nd vepres - sung the same day as the festival.
How does the office of Vepres work?
i) Opening Verse + response
ii) 4 or 5 psalms that are preceded/followed by an antienne (anthem).
iii) a reading.
iv) magnificat
v) prayers conclusion and the final 'Benedicamus Domino' with 'Deo gratias'.
