When nicotine activates the sodium ion coupled cholinergic receptor, it increases the influx of Na+, resulting an excitatory response. Cholinergic receptors have interesting interactions with the dopaminergic system.
Theories: Certain areas of prefrontal cortex are under-aroused or underdeveloped (or delayed in development in children with ADHD) in ADHD & activated by therapeutic stimulants –theory= increases executive functions including impulse control & attention.

2nd theory—reticular activating system is under-aroused in ADHD resulting in distractibility/lack of focus/lack of attention/---- stimulants increasing NE in this area counteract under-arousal.
