Explain DRule.1:Axis of the classification and rules of chapter prioritisation

Where there is any doubt as to where a condition should be coded, the 'spceial group' chapters must take priority

What are the three different types of chapters in ICD 10

1. Special group chapters

2. Body system chapters

3. Other chapters

Define 'special group' chapters

These classify conditions that do not focus on any one body system. Includes chapters I-V, XV-XVII and XIX

Define body system chapters

Chapters VI-XIV classify conditions according to the body system they belong to

Define 'other' chapters

Chapters XVIII and XX-XXII classify other disorders and factors which do not sit comfortably in either a special group or body system chapter

Explain DRule.2:category and code structure

Code assignment must always be made to either fourth character level or five character level in order for the code to be valid.

Where a code is three characters and no subdivisions filler X must be assigned as the fourth character for data processing and validation (it is still considered three characters for classification purposes).

Where a code requires filler X and a fifth character filler X must still be assigned in the fourth position.
