What are head lice and nits?

♥ Head lice tiny brown insects


♥ Cling to hair, feed off scalp


♥ Lay eggs which hatch after 7 days, take 10 days for newly hatched louse


♥ Nits are empty white egg shell, stick very strongly to hair

Aetiology of headlice

♥ No seasonal variation


♥ Louse lives for 1 month, lays eggs at at the base of hair shaft


♥ Most infections caught from family and friends

Problems with headlice

♥ Many do not show symptoms


♥ Itchy scalp sometimes


♥ Often takes three months for an itch to develop♥Does not wash off with normal shampoo

Differential diagnosis for headlice

1. Dandruff:


- irritation and itching of scalp all over


- flaky


- skin debris visible


2. Seborrhoeic dermatitis


- Affects other areas (face and napkin area)


- Infants CRADLE CAP

Detection Wet Hair Method

1. Wash hair as normal


2. Put lots of conditioner


3. Comb out tangles


4. Using detection comb into roots of hair touching scalp draw down to tips of hair


5. Comb all parts of scalp


6. Check for lice after each stroke (wipe/rinse if seen)


7. Rinse out conditioner


8. Repeat procedure

Detection Dry Hair Method

1. Straighten untangle hair with comb


2. Switch to detection comb


3. Comb each section 3/4x


4. Look for lice each time


5. Trap lice with thumb, avoids risk of lice being repelled by static electricity as comb withdrawn from hair


6. Continue into full head covered
