Prosthesis

Replacement of an absent part of the human body by some artificial part

Prosthetics

Art and science of supplying artificial replacement for an absent part of the human body

Prosthodontics

-branch of dental art and science that deals specifically with the replacement if missing dental and oral structures

-branch of dentistry pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral functions, comfort, appearance and health of the patient by the restoration of natural teeth and for the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes

Tooth-Supported Rpd / Tooth-Borne Rpd

Derives its support from teeth at each end of the edentulous area

Tooth-Tissue-Supported Rpd / Tooth-Tissue-Borne Rpd

support came from residual ridge

Distal Extension Partial Denture

Base extending posteriorly on a rpd

Objectives

• Elimination of oral disease to greatest extent possible

• Preservation of the health and relationship of the teeth and the health of oral and paraoral structures

• Restorations of oral functions

Appliance

Devices worn by the patient in the course of treatment

Stability

Quality of a prosthesis to be firm, stable or constant and to resist displacement by frictional, horizontal or rotational stresses

Retention

Quality inherent in the denture that resists the vertical forces of dislodgement

Interim / Provisional Denture / Temporary Denture

Dental prosthesis to be used for a short time for a reason of aesthetics, mastication, occlusal support or convenience

Complete Denture

Replaces all of the natural dentition and associated structures

Abutment

A portion of a tooth or that portion of an implant that serves to support and/or retain a prosthesis

Height of Contour

- greatest convexity of the tooth

- a line encircling a tooth, designating its greatest circumference at a selected position determined by a dental surveyor

Undercut

Portion of a tooth that lies between the height of contour and gingiva

Angle of Cervical Convergence

An angle viewed between a vertical rod contacting an abutment tooth and the axial surface of the abutment

Guiding Planes

- Two or more parallel surfaces of abutment teeth shaped to direct a prosthesis during placement and removal

-easy insertion

Retainers

Type of clasp or attachement device used for the fixation, stabilisation, or retention of a prosthesis

Bar clasp arm

Clasp arm that originates from the base of the framework, traverses the soft tissue & approaches the tooth undercut from a gingival direction

Circumferential clasp arm

Originates above the height of contour, traverses part of the suprabulge portion of the tooth and approaches the tooth and approaches the tooth undercut from an occlusal direction

Major connector

Part of the rpd that connects the components one side of the opposite side of the arch

Continuous Bar

Component of the partial denture framework that augments the major connector and lies on the lingual or facial surface of several teeth

Palatal Major Connector

Thin, broad palatal coverage that is used as a major connector

Anatomic Replica

Cast metal palatal major connectors that duplicate the topography of that portion of the patient's mouth

Indirect retainer

Assists the direction retainers in preventing displacement of the distal extension denture bases by resisting fever action from the opposite of the fulcrum line

Rest

Component of the partial denture that is placed on abutment tooth, ideally in a prepared rest seat, so that it limits movement of the denture in a gingival directions and transmits functional forces to the tooth

Denture Base

- Rests on the residual bone covered soft tissue and to which the artificial teeth are attached

- holds the pontic; made of acrylic resin

Residual/Edentulous Ridge

Residual bone with its soft tissue that covers the underlying area of the denture base

Basal Seat / Denture Foundation Area

Oral tissues and structures of the residual ridge supporting the denture base

Relining

Resurfacing of a denture base with nee material to make it fit the underlying tissues more accurately

Rebasing

Replacement of the entire denture base with new material without changing the occlusal relations of the teeth

Balanced Occlusion

Simultaneous contacting of max and man teeth on the right & left in the ant. & post. Occlusal areas in centric of any eccentric position within the functional ridge

Stone

Gyspum material that are employed for their hardness, accuracy or abrasion resistance

Cast

Positive reproduction of a dental arch made from an impression

Investment Cast

Also termed as refractory cast because it is compounded to withstand high temperature without disintegrating

-pinakagahi; type V stone

Mold

The cavity into which a casting is made or the shape of an artificial tooth

Casting

Metal object shaped by being poured into a mold to harden

Dental Cast surveyor

Instrument used to determin the relative parallelism of two or more axial surfaces of teeth or other parts of a cast of a dental arch

Wrought

An alloy worked into shape by rolling, forging or extrusion
