What was FDM originally used for?

Describe the FDM process
|
Polymer is fed through a heated nozzle in filament form. The polymer then melts and is extruded from the nozzle according to where it is required on the slice file. The build chamber temperature is controlled to solidify the deposited material.

What materials can be used for FDM?

Only amorphous polymers, such as ABS and Polycarbonate

What are the benefits of FDM?
|
Office friendly due to clean operation and non-hazardous materials.
Good range of material, including engineering polymers Can be done cheaply. One system can use multiple material. Some support materials are soluble. |

What are the limitations of FDM?
|
Slow for large parts
Poor surface finish Repeated parts can differ in density Weak in Z-direction |

How is FDM similar to SLA?
|
Supports required, these supports can be automatically generated by the system. Different materials require different supports.

Describe the Waterworks support material
|
Support material for ABS polymer. Can be used for complex internal geometries and dissolves into a water based solution.

What applications does FDM have?
|
Investment casting.
One off manufacturing where developing a production process is prohibitively time consuming and expensive. Could potentially be useful for space manufacture, as liquid and powder systems cannot be used due to containment issues in low gravity. |
